Chemical Peels 101: Most Common Myths Debunked

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]A chemical peel is a professional skin procedure that uses a chemical solution to resurface the skin by “peeling” away the top dead layers to reveal a smoother, healthier complexion.

Don’t let the name fool you. Anyone who has had a chemical peel will tell you words like “relaxing” or “rejuvenating” come to mind. Only taking about 20-25 minutes, this “lunchtime facial” will have your skin looking its absolute best in almost no time.

Chemical peels are fantastic for your skin, but there are a few common misconceptions about peels that need to be clarified once and for all.

Myth One: The solutions are harsh.

The solutions in chemical peels are anything but harsh considering the ingredients are natural and plant-based. In fact, the solutions are so mild that even the most sensitive skin will benefit.

If it’s you’re a first-timer or have sensitive skin, the AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) are best for you. AHAs are acids derived from natural sources, such as milk, sugar can juice and tomato juice. It is the mildest solution offered, but don’t let that fool you – AHAs are great combatants for fine wrinkles, acne, dryness and uneven skin tone.

If you’re looking to treat acne-prone and scarred skin, the BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acid) are best for you. Plant-based BHAs, like salicylic acid, penetrate deep into the pores to control oil production, loosen dead skin cells, and dissolve impurities all together.

Myth Two: It’s a one-size-fits-all treatment.

Your dermatologist or esthetician will tailor your peel for your skin type and/or wants and needs. Chemical peels come in three different potency levels in terms of depth.

  • Light – Gentle. Removes only the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin, and can be done once a week for up to six weeks.
  • Medium – Mild. Removes skin cells below the epidermis and can be done every 2-3 weeks.
  • Deep – Intense. Resurfaces the skin by Removing the epidermis and some of the top, middle and lower layer below it. Solely performed by a dermatologist on an as-needed basis because it causes major discomfort and a significant healing time.

A light or medium peel is best, as either will give you instantly fresh and healthy skin with zero pain and no downtime. Sure, a deeper peel will yield more significant results, but not without pain and a lengthy recovery.

Myth Three: It only worked if your skin visibly peels.

An effective treatment doesn’t mean that your skin will visibly peel. Peeling begins at the cellular level of the skin, and depending on your skin type, it’s not always visible by the naked eye. While healthier skin has less visible peeling overall, significantly impacted skin may see little to no visible peeling initially, but will show after a few treatments.
