What Is A Dental Crown?

For those that have never heard of a crown before, it is a type of cap that is designed to completely cover your real tooth. Usually, they’re made from metal or a mix of both porcelain and metal and they can be fitting where a tooth has decayed, broken or been damaged. In some cases, they’re even used to improve the appearance of your teeth.

In under to fit a crown, your old tooth will need to be drilled down to a small peg shape as this makes it easier for the crown to fixed on to. It’s important to note that it can take quite some time for our lab to prepare a crown that is designed specifically for you, so you probably won’t be able to have your crown fitted on the same day as your appointment.

What Different Types Of Dental Crowns Are There?

Currently, there are four different types of dental crowns.

Ceramic – Ceramic crowns are used when it comes to restoring your front teeth, as they have the ability to blend with your natural tooth colour. They’re made out of a porcelain-based material.

Porcelain-fused to metal – Porcelain-fused to metal crowns are designed to provide a stronger bond than a regular porcelain crown. This is because it is connected to a metal structure that is extremely durable.

Gold alloys – Gold alloy crowns are created using a  mix of gold, copper and other metals. As a result, they provide a strong bond to the tooth, meaning it won’t wear away the tooth itself.

Base metal alloys – Base metal alloy crowns are made up of non-noble metals that are highly resistant to corrosion. These metals, of course, make for a very strong crown. These crowns typically require the least amount of healthy tooth in order to be fitted.
