When you hear “orthodontics,” you probably think of metal braces. However, orthodontics is so much more than that! Orthodontics deals with the prevention and correction of dental and facial irregularities. Helping with prevention and correction means that Baton Rouge orthodontics can help people of all ages achieve healthy, beautiful smiles. Orthodontic treatment can be beneficial for the whole family!

The Importance of a Healthy Smile

A healthy smile is vital for both physical and psychological reasons. First and foremost, healthy teeth and gums are essential for proper digestion. Breaking down food begins in the mouth; if your teeth and gums are not healthy, you can disrupt this process. Additionally, studies have shown that people with straight teeth are perceived as more successful, intelligent, and attractive than crooked teeth. Therefore, orthodontic treatment can have a positive impact on both your physical health and your self-esteem.

Orthodontic Treatment for Children

We recommend that children see an orthodontist around age 7. Most children have a mix of baby and adult teeth at this age, making it the perfect time to assess potential problems. If an orthodontic problem is detected early on, it may be possible to correct it without the need for braces or other intrusive treatments. Moreover, early treatment can often shorten the overall length of treatment time later on.

Orthodontic Treatment for Teens and Adults

While orthodontic treatment is most commonly associated with teenagers, more and more adults are seeking treatment. One in five orthodontic patients is over the age of 18! Adults may seek out orthodontic treatment for many reasons, such as wanting to improve their appearance or address issues that have been present since childhood but were never corrected. Thanks to technological advances, many different types of braces are now less visible than traditional metal ones, making them an excellent option for adults who want to maintain a professional appearance during treatment.

Our Treatments in Baton Rouge, LA

The Smile Spa offers a wide range of quality services, from general dentistry to periodontal therapy and everything in between! Our orthodontic services include the following:

Porcelain Braces

When it comes to braces, there are a lot of different options available. Metal braces are the most traditional option, but they can be quite noticeable. Ceramic braces are popular for adults who want to keep their smile looking natural. However, porcelain braces offer many advantages over other types of braces. First of all, they are less noticeable than metal or ceramic braces. Second, they are more comfortable to wear because they put less pressure on the teeth and gums. Finally, porcelain braces are easier to keep clean because they won’t trap food and plaque as easily as metal or ceramic braces. If you’re considering braces, ask us about the benefits of porcelain braces.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a clear alternative to metal braces for adults and teens. With Invisalign, there are no brackets or wires. Instead, our team will create a series of custom-made, clear aligners that you wear over your teeth. As you wear each set of aligners, your teeth will gently and gradually shift until they have straightened to the final position that Dr. Aimee Russo-Mounger or Dr. Alexis Russo has prescribed. You’ll visit us approximately every six weeks to ensure your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 9-15 months, and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.

Permanent and Removable Retainers

Retainers are custom-made mouthpieces that help keep your teeth in their new, straight position. You may need to wear them full-time for a few weeks, then usually only at night after that. There are two main types of retainers – removable and permanent. Removable retainers are the most common type. They look like clear plastic wire and fit easily over your teeth. You can take them out whenever you want – to eat, brush your teeth, etc. Just remember to put them back in so they can do their job! Permanent retainers are bonded to the backs of your teeth with dental cement, so they’re not going anywhere until treatment is complete. Some people prefer this type because they don’t have to worry about losing or misplacing them (though you still have to be careful when brushing around them).
